THE LOWDOWN

FIORENTINA

Under the management of Vincenzo Italiano, Fiorentina reached both the Coppa Italia and UEFA Europa Conference League final last season with an expectation that they would improve and potentially look at a top four spot this season. They had started the season well but their post-October international break form has been abysmal.

I Viola come into this on the back of scraping past a Cukaricki side by a goal to nil in Europe in midweek, despite hammering the same opponents 6-0 a few weeks ago. The hosts have suffered three successive Serie A defeats, too, albeit two of those were relatively unfortunate losses to Juventus and Lazio.

BOLOGNA

The appointment of Thiago Motta in the early stages of last season went a little under the radar but the former Italy international has really ignited something special at Bologna as they aim for some form of European football next season. They have suffered just one defeat so far this season and that came against AC Milan.

That loss to AC Milan came on the opening day of the season, too, so they are now unbeaten in their last ten Serie A matches as they begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top six. They come into this on the back of an impressive 1-0 defeat of Lazio as their controlled, progressive style of football continues to develop into something serious.

THE TEAM NEWS

FIORENTINA

Fiorentina are missing key players for this weekend with Michael Kayode and Dodo injured, whilst Gaetano Castrovilli and Lucas Beltran doubts.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Terracciano; Parisi, Martinez Quarta, Ranieri, Biraghi; Arthur, Mandragora; Gonzalez, Barak, Kouame; Beltran

UNAVAILABLE: Kayode (Injured), Dodo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Castrovilli (Injured), Beltran (Injured)

BOLOGNA

Bologna’s biggest absentee remains Adama Soumaoro but Thiago Motta would be able to name an unchanged eleven for this game against Fiorentina.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; Posch, Beukema, Calafiori, Lykogiannis; Aebischer, Freuler; Orsolini, Ferguson, Saelemaekers; Zirkzee

UNAVAILABLE: El Azzouzi (Injured), Soumaoro (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: De Silvestri (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

The home team come into this expecting to find some consistency as they try and challenge for a top four finish or a top six finish at the very least. Fiorentina’s general inconsistency has turned into simply poor form and I Viola come into this on the back of three successive defeats. Bologna have been excellent to watch since the appointment of Thiago Motta and will go to Florence and take the game to their opposition. This one could well be quite an entertaining encounter at the Artemio Franchi on Sunday afternoon.
