THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

Bologna have been really impressive this season as they try and aim for a top four or five finish in Serie A with the goal of achieving UEFA Champions League qualification. They begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting fourth in the table and three points clear of Roma in fifth ahead of this match day.

They come into this one on the back of a goalless draw against a struggling Frosinone side in their most recent outing, last weekend, in the capital city. Bologna have suffered just one defeat in their last 11 matches. They are playing a proactive and progressive style of football with the coaching of former PSG midfielder, Thiago Motta.

MONZA

Monza remain an intensely ambitious club as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table but keen on a top seven or eight finish and potential European qualification, despite having gained promotion to the top-flight for the first time ever in 2022. They begin the weekend sitting just four points adrift of the top eight, which is likely to be enough for UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots.

The visitors come into this one on the back of returning from the March international break with back-to-back losses. They were edged out by a goal to nil in Turin against Torino with a 69th minute penalty scored by Tonny Sanabria before then being comfortably defeated by four goals to two by defending champions Napoli.

THE TEAM NEWS

BOLOGNA

Bologna are without wing-back Alexis Saelemaekers due to suspension for this weekend, whilst both Jens Odgaard and Adama Soumaoro are sidelined through injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Ravaglia; Posch, Lucumi, Calafiori, Lykogiannis; Freuler; Orsolini, Aebischer, Ferguson, Ndoye; Zirkzee

UNAVAILABLE: Saelemaekers (Suspended), Odgaard (Injured), Soumaoro (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

MONZA

Papu Gomez is unavailable for Monza as a result for doping, whilst Luca Caldirola is also out suspended. Dany Mota and Samuele Vignato are out injured.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Di Gregorio; Birindelli, Izzo, Mari, Akpa-Akpro, Carboni; Colpani, Gagliardini, Pessina, Maldini; Duric

UNAVAILABLE: Gomez (Suspended), Caldirola (Suspended), Mota (Injured), Vignato (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: D’Ambrosio (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one could well be quite one-sided. Despite links that Thiago Motta will depart Bologna for Juventus at the end of the season, the hosts will still want to finish with a flourish and ensure they do end up in the top four or five. Monza have potentially just begun to drift with Raffaele Palladino’s side perhaps running out of steam after a decent couple of months. Given their own form, as well as home advantage, backing Bologna is the way to go for this one.

TIP: BOLOGNA TO WIN
