THE LOWDOWN

LORIENT

Much like Ligue 1 rivals Strasbourg, Lorient have been dogged by off-field protests throughout the season as a result of an American takeover with Bill Foley’s ownership of the club now meaning that they are all but a feeder club to Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. They have therefore spent the vast majority of the season battling against relegation.

They do, though, begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three with eight games of the season to go as they head into the ‘run-in’ in France. Lorient did share another entertaining 2-2 draw with Monaco before the March international break, meaning they have suffered just two defeats in eight matches.

BREST

Stade Brest have been the surprise package in French football and, arguably, the whole of European football this season as one of the smallest budgets in Ligue 1 punch well above their weight to very much challenge for a top three finish and potential UEFA Champions League qualification in France’s top-flight.

Brest, coached by former Sunderland player Eric Roy, begin the weekend sitting second in the table with 13 victories, eight draws and five defeats in their 26 matches so far this season. They did, though, head into the March international break on the back of losing 1-0 away to Lens and then being held to a 1-1 draw Lille.

THE PREDICTION

Regis Le Bris’ Lorient have been quite entertaining throughout this season, even with their major fluctuations in form. Their 26 matches so far this season have consisted of 84 goals with 35 scored and 49 conceded. Stade Brest, on the other hand, have been a very different type of side with just 20 goals conceded with the joint best defensive record alongside Nice. Lorient, though, will push Brest all the way and a rare game in which both teams score in a Brest game would seem quite like a reasonable bet.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
