THE LOWDOWN

LUTON

Rob Edwards and Luton Town were left emotionally shaken last weekend after their game against AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium had to be abandoned after around an hour due to their captain, Tom Lockyer, suffering a cardiac arrest. The Hatters’ captain was discharged from hospital earlier this week.

Luton, in their first season in the top-flight during the Premier League era, have managed two victories in 16 games but consistently been able to bloody the nose of some of the higher ranking sides. Dramatic comebacks were required by Arsenal and Manchester City, whilst Tottenham were forced to hold on for a 1-0 win and Liverpool needed a last-gasp equaliser at Kenilworth Road.

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle United’s nightmare-ish month continued in midweek as The Magpies were knocked out of the EFL Cup at the quarter-final stage on penalties by Chelsea. They had led as they headed into second-half stoppage-time but a Kieran Trippier mistake allowed for Mykhaylo Mudryk to score and then Trippier, as well as Matt Ritchie, missed penalties in the shootout.

In the last few weeks, Newcastle have been knocked out of all European competition after finishing at the bottom of their UEFA Champions League group and they now have just one trophy to aim for – the FA Cup, where they will meet arch-rivals Sunderland in the third round next month. Newcastle did earn a much-needed victory over ten-man Fulham last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

LUTON

Captain Tom Lockyer will obviously be missing with whether or not he can continue his career at some stage up in the air. Luton and Bournemouth’s clash being wiped means that Marvelous Nakamba’s suspension will continue through to this weekend.

Cauley Woodrow has returned to training so could be back in the hosts’ squad this weekend but they remain with defensive injuries as both Dan Potts and Reece Burke are unlikely to feature but making progress in their respective recoveries.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Kaminski; Mengi, Osho, Bell; Kabore, Chong, Barkley, Doughty; Townsend, Adebayo, Brown

UNAVAILABLE: Lockyer (Illness), Nakamba (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Potts (Injured), Burke (Injured), Woodrow (Injured)

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe has said that Anthony Gordon and Emil Krafth both picked up knocks against Chelsea in midweek. Alexander Isak, Fabian Schar and Joelinton all missed that match and their involvement remains doubtful at Kenilworth Road.

They could all be joining a long list of absentees this weekend with the suspended Sandro Tonali and injured Javi Manquillo, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Matt Targett and Nick Pope.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Trippier, Lascelles, Botman, Burn; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Miley; Almiron, Wilson, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Pope (Injured), Targett (Injured), Manquillo (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Anderson (Injured), Willock (Injured), Murphy (Injured), Barnes (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Krafth (Injured), Schar (Injured), Joelinton (Injured), Gordon (Injured), Isak (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Luton have been able to compete well with some of the better teams in the division and have found themselves more than just in games against those teams towards the top. They will welcome a Newcastle side to Kenilworth Road that are not necessarily in disarray but are certainly really struggling to cope with the demands of a European campaign in this first-half of the season. As a result, value could well be found in a double chance bet in favour of the home team.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – LUTON OR DRAW
