THE LOWDOWN
LUTON
For the first time this season, Luton Town went into a Premier League match as the overwhelming favourites last weekend but The Hatters saw their impressive unbeaten run of form ended by fellow strugglers Sheffield United, losing 3-1 to The Blades at Kenilworth Road and closing the gap between the two sides to seven points.
Rob Edwards’ side still sit outside of the bottom three and the relegation places ahead of this match day after what had been a really impressive run of form. Their 4-4 draw with Newcastle United earlier this month meant they had suffered just one defeat in their previous nine matches across all competitions in a run stretching back to before Christmas.
MAN UTD
Quite astonishingly, Manchester United are coming into this weekend on the back of four successive victories across all competitions, despite continued unconvincing performances. However, even without looking like everything is clicking, The Red Devils now begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting six points outside of the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots.
Erik ten Hag’s men remain unbeaten in the calendar year of 2024 with five wins and a draw. Their current four-match winning streak began with a 4-2 win at Newport County before then winning by four goals to three away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. After that they defeated West Ham United 3-0 before scoring late on via Scott McTominay last weekend to edge past Aston Villa.
THE TEAM NEWS
LUTON
In his pre-match press conference ahead of Luton's clash with Manchester United, Rob Edwards confirmed that he'll be able to name a similar squad to the one that was beaten 3-1 by Sheffield United last weekend.
The former Forest Green Rovers boss does not even have the injury concern of Teden Mengi, though, either, who is back available and able to play. They do remain without club captain Tom Lockyer, as well as the injured Marvelous Nakamba in midfield.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Kaminski; Mengi, Osho, Bell; Ogbene, Lokonga, Barkley, Doughty; Clark; Morris, Adebayo
UNAVAILABLE: Andersen (Injured), Lockyer (Illness), Hashioka (Injured), Nakamba (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
MAN UTD
Erik ten Hag has said that England international defender Luke Shaw is a doubt for this weekend’s trip down to Kenilworth Road but the Dutchman remains confident of his involvement saying he is ‘positive he can make it’.
The Red Devils, though, remain without a few other first-teamers as Ten Hag confirmed that the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Mount are all ‘weeks’ away from a return to the fold. Lisandro Martinez and Anthony Martial are also unavailable.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Mainoo, Casemiro; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund
UNAVAILABLE: Martinez (Injured), Wan-Bissaka (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Mount (Injured), Martial (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Shaw (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
There has been a feeling throughout this season that Luton Town will take the scalp of one of the so-called big six at Kenilworth Road. They led against both Arsenal and Manchester City before losing. They led until second-half stoppage-time before sharing a point with Liverpool and pushed Tottenham and Chelsea all the way in one-goal margin defeats. They now face a Manchester United side that have apparently found some form, albeit, as has been the case with pretty much all of their wins this season, there is something that remains to be frankly unknown with Erik ten Hag’s men. A story seems written on Sunday afternoon and a double chance bet in favour of Luton would seem like good value.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – LUTON TO WIN OR DRAW
