THE LOWDOWN

LIVERPOOL

It has been a difficult few weeks for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp in what is his emotional farewell. The Reds were knocked out by Manchester United after extra-time in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last month before dropping points to the same opposition at Old Trafford last weekend, being knocked off top spot in the Premier League.

Then, arguably the biggest shock, they suffered a fairly humiliating 3-0 loss to Atalanta at Anfield in midweek with a brace scored by Gianluca Scamacca as well as one from Mario Pasalic. That does mean Klopp may be tempted to heavily rest and rotate for the second-leg with the likelihood being that they are already out.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Ever since Oliver Glasner’s first game in charge against Burnley at Selhurst Park in late-February, it has been a worrying time for Crystal Palace supporters with the gap between themselves and the bottom three and the relegation places becoming smaller and smaller; they begin this weekend sitting just five points clear of the drop.

The Eagles come into this one on the back of a 4-2 loss at home to Manchester City in their most recent outing, last weekend. Palace took an early lead in that match via Jean-Philippe Mateta before City ran riot with a brace by Kevin De Bruyne as well as goals from Rico Lewis and Erling Braut Haaland before Odsonne Edouard notched what was a consolation.

THE TEAM NEWS

LIVERPOOL

Jurgen Klopp said that the only reason Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to the bench against Atalanta on Thursday evening was because they could have 23 players in the squad but there was ‘no chance’ for him to play.

Diogo Jota was ‘fine’ for 20 minutes and Klopp has said that they will ‘see what we can do from there’. Alisson is also expected to remain unavailable, despite returning to training this week.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Endo, Szoboszlai; Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Matip (Injured), Thiago (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Alisson (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured)

CRYSTAL PALACE

Oliver Glasner welcomed Michael Olise back into the first-team fold last weekend and he played for the Eagles off the bench against Manchester City. He has been described as ‘close to starting’ ahead of this weekend.

They do, though, remain without the likes of Sam Johnstone, Marc Guehi and Cheick Doucoure but Jairo Riedewald could return to the squad after an injury issue.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Ward, Andersen, Lerma; Munoz, Hughes, Wharton, Mitchell; Olise, Eze; Mateta

UNAVAILABLE: Johnstone (Injured), Guehi (Injured), Holding (Injured), Richards (Injured), Doucoure (Injured), Franca (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Riedewald (Injured), Rak-Sakyi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Liverpool need a response and a reaction. During this tricky period they have actually been a little ‘dodgy’ even when they have won. They needed to come from behind against Brighton on Easter Sunday before fending off a Sheffield United fightback a few days later with the Blades equalising in that game in the second-half. Palace are arguably perfect opposition for them in that regard and a comfortable home win is to be expected.

TIP: LIVERPOOL TO WIN
