THE LOWDOWN

LIVERPOOL

After Liverpool dismantled West Ham United by five goals to one in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup in midweek, Jurgen Klopp called on his supporters to create an atmosphere at Anfield on Saturday evening as The Reds take on Arsenal in a top-of-the-table clash. The winner of the match will go into Christmas at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool have suffered just one defeat in the Premier League so far this season and that was their controversial loss against Tottenham Hotspur back in September. The Reds, though, have been a little unconvincing at times and not quite at the standard of their very best teams from recent years. They remain a ferociously impressive, attacking team, though.

ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are looking to head into Christmas on the top of the Premier League table. The Gunners went back above Liverpool last weekend with a dominant performance in their 2-0 defeat of Brighton and Hove Albion getting them back on the wining track after a defeat to Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago.

Arsenal had been held to a 1-1 draw by PSV Eindhoven with a rotated side in their final group stage game in this season’s UEFA Champions League. They have not quite matched the performance standards that they hit at times last season but have arguably been a lot more mature as they return to Anfield for the first time since blowing a two-goal lead there in April.

THE TEAM NEWS

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool have had a fair few defensive injuries throughout this season with Joel Matip and Andrew Robertson remaining sidelined for the long-term. Pep Lijnders also confirmed earlier this week that Scottish attacker, Ben Doak, will be joining them on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

Diogo Jota was viewed as progressing well but it is not known as to whether he will be involved for the visit of fellow title challengers Arsenal. Ryan Gravenberch should be available, though.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Jones, Endo, Szoboszlai; Salah, Nunez, Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Matip (Injured), Robertson (Injured), Thiago (Injured), Bajcetic (Injured), Mac Allister (Injured), Doak (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Gravenberch (Fatigue), Diogo Jota (Injured)

ARSENAL

Defensive injuries have also been a key concern for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal this season. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber remain long-term absentees in that position but there is seemingly nothing fresh to report in that area.

In fact, there is nothing fresh to report anywhere in the Arsenal squad with the other injury absentees for the trip to Anfield being pre-existing ones as midfield quartet Mohamed Elneny, Jorginho, Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira remaining unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured), Tomiyasu (Injured), Partey (Injured), Vieira (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Jorginho (Injured), Elneny (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In April, these two played out a stunner as Arsenal let slip a two-goal lead and also began a run that let slip their title hopes. Liverpool were held to a goalless draw last weekend but failing to score in successive home matches is very unlikely and even more so after Klopp’s rallying call to supporters. Arsenal will know, though, they are capable, as have been most sides this season, of exploiting holes in the open Liverpool defence so an entertaining encounter is once again to be expected.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
