THE LOWDOWN
EVERTON
Sean Dyche’s Everton begin the weekend sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places but only a point behind 17th placed Luton Town, albeit The Hatters do have the benefit of a game in hand. Everton initially reacted well to their points deduction during the November international break but The Toffees have really worsened in their performances and results of late.
They come into this one on the back of a 2-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City with a brace from Erling Haaland. That defeat came on the back of three successive draws and does now mean they have managed just one victory in their last 11 matches across all competitions with that one being by a goal to nil at home to Crystal Palace in an FA Cup third round replay.
CRYSTAL PALACE
Crystal Palace looked like they may be easing the pressure on Roy Hodgson on Monday evening when they went into the half-time interval with a 1-0 lead against Chelsea via Jefferson Lerma. However, they were outplayed by their capital city rivals in the second-half and fell to a 3-1 loss at Selhurst Park in the end.
That means The Eagles begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just five points above the bottom three and the relegation places with rumours of Steve Cooper potentially being appointed continuing to grow. Only five teams have now conceded more than the usually solid Hodgson-coached Palace have conceded so far this season.
THE TEAM NEWS
EVERTON
Sean Dyche's pre-match press conference is not scheduled until Saturday morning so the following line-up is based on pre-existing knowledge that is subject to change. The Toffees are set to be without the likes of Andre Gomes, Dele Alli and Arnaud Danjuma.
Former Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey, who played at right-back against Manchester City last week, is a doubt for this week with a fever but is expected to be available, whilst Abdoulaye Doucoure is also doubtful for Sean Dyche's men.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; McNeil, Gueye, Garner, Young; Harrison; Calvert-Lewin
UNAVAILABLE: Gomes (Injured), Alli (Injured), Danjuma (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Godfrey (Illness), Doucoure (Injured)
CRYSTAL PALACE
Roy Hodgson was taken ill at training on Thursday morning and, as a result, did not take Crystal Palace's scheduled pre-match press conference. At the time of writing, Hodgson has been reported as stable in hospital with persistent rumours he is on the verge of being replaced at Selhurst Park by Oliver Glasner.
What is known is that The Eagles will remain without key attacking duo Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, who are both still suffering with injuries. Marc Guehi is also expected be missing for this week's clash with fellow relegation battlers.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Henderson; Munoz, Andersen, Richards, Mitchell; Wharton, Lerma; Ayew, Hughes, Franca; Mateta
UNAVAILABLE: Guehi (Injured), Holding (Injured), Doucoure (Injured), Eze (Injured), Olise (Injured), Rak-Sakyi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Hughes (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
We have a genuine six-pointer in the Premier League on Monday evening as a desperate Crystal Palace make the trip to Merseyside to face Everton at Goodison Park. As previously mentioned, Everton’s only win in the last couple of months came with an Andre Gomes free-kick against Palace in an FA Cup replay. Neither of these teams are in good shape and backing either would appear fairly foolish but what is most likely is that it is a tense and nervy affair between two teams limited in attack with stifled creativity so a low-scoring match should be anticipated.
