THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa have enjoyed a very impressive season as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top four of the Premier League table and with a genuine chance of earning UEFA Champions League qualification this season but performances and results have definitely dipped in the last couple of months.

The Villains come into this one on the back of a 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City with England international Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick in that game. That loss means that Unai Emery’s side have managed just two victories in their last six matches across all competitions and eight wins in 21 since launching themselves into the title race.

BRENTFORD

Under the management of Thomas Frank, Brentford have been really underwhelming this season and they are heading into the Premier League ‘run-in’ genuinely in the relegation battle. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places with eight games to go.

The Bees come into this one on the back of another frustrating result as they shared a goalless draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Gtech Community Stadium in midweek. Brentford are now winless in their last eight Premier League matches with just one victory in their last 19 games across all competitions.

THE TEAM NEWS

ASTON VILLA

Unai Emery has been dealt yet another blow with the Spanish coach having to confirm that Jacob Ramsey will be missing through injury for the rest of this season.

The Villains are able to welcome back Scotland international John McGinn from a three-match suspension, whilst decisions on Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins will be made late on.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne; Douglas Luiz, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Diaby; Jhon Duran

UNAVAILABLE: Mings (Injured), Cash (Injured), Kamara (Injured), Ramsey (Injured), Buendia (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Martinez (Injured), Watkins (Injured)

BRENTFORD

In his pre-match press conference ahead of travelling to Villa Park, Thomas Frank said that Kevin Schade ‘could be available’ as the German returns from a long injury layoff.

The Bees remain without several key first-teamers, though, especially defensively, with Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry remaining unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Flekken; Jorgensen, Ajer, Collins; Roerslev, Yamolyuk, Janelt, Jensen, Lewis-Potter; Wissa, Toney

UNAVAILABLE: Mee (Injured), Pinnock (Injured), Hickey (Injured), Henry (Injured), Norgaard (Injured), Dasilva (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Schade (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Unai Emery will not be feeling any pressure but the added distraction of a UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final against Lille in midweek will not be too helpful as they try and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Brentford will go to Villa Park on the back of becoming a little more defensively solid since the return of Nathan Collins to the side. A rare, low-scoring Premier League match may be in store at Villa Park.
