THE LOWDOWN

Gent

Throughout the vast majority of the campaign, under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Gent had been in the top four and the Championship round playoff places. Combined with reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, it has been an impressive campaign for the visitors but they did miss out on a top four spot to reigning champions Club Brugge on the final day of the regular season.

They have already finished at the top of the end of season UEFA Europa Conference League playoff group stage as they come into this on the back of a comfortable and impressive 3-1 defeat of Westerlo in their most recent outing, last weekend.

The hosts have been entertaining to watch throughout the season, too, with 78 goals scored in 39 matches. That average of two goals per game is in the midst of a current five-match unbeaten run of form and they have suffered just one domestic defeat in their last 12 matches.

Standard Liege

Last year, Standard Liege, who are a part of Belgium’s ‘Big Three’ alongside Club Brugge and Anderlecht, suffered a really difficult campaign as they languished in the bottom-half of the Jupiler Pro League. This time around, though, after the summer appointment of former Celtic and New York City boss Ronny Deila, they have been much-improved and spent pretty much the entirety of the campaign in the top eight and the European playoff spots.

The visitors, despite their improvement in the 2022/23 campaign, have seemingly switched off as they come into this on the back of back-to-back hammerings. They were beaten heavily 4-0 by Cercle Brugge last weekend, backing up a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Westerlo a couple of weeks ago. They have collected two points from their five European playoff group stage games.

They are finishing the season with a bit of a whimper, which will irritate the extremely passionate supporters of the club. However, the shock departure of Deila to their arch-rivals and fellow members of the aforementioned 'Big Three' just last weekend, has infuriated supporters and there is a toxic atmosphere at the club with interim coach Geoffrey Valenne seeing them through to the summer.

THE PREDICTION

These two head into the final day of the 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League campaign on the back of very different recent results and performances and they will both be in very different moods, too. Gent are finishing with a flourish and maintaining some excellent form, despite having already assured themselves of UEFA Europa Conference League qualification for next season. Standard Liege, on the other hand, have conceded 11 goals in their last four matches, which is nearly 20% of the goals they have conceded throughout the entire season. Given their form, as well as home advantage, a fairly emphatic Gent victory is expected on this final day of the season.

TIP: GENT TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
