FPL Gameweek 7 – Projections

With five goals in the opening 18 minutes on Saturday, it's safe to say Man City have reaffirmed their title credential and put to bed any talk of them suffering a dip in form. In the end, it was eight against Watford who were truly woeful. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.9m) was once again at his instrumental best, Bernardo Silva (£7.8m) bagged a hat-trick and Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) continued his scoring start to the season. To be honest, it was hard to find a City asset that didn’t have a field day.

Elsewhere, Liverpool chalked up another three points while conceding ONE goal. Meanwhile on the Sunday, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Callum Wilson (£7.8m) matched Aguero as the only three players to have secured attacking returns in each of the opening six fixtures. Wilson in particular is perhaps currently the most underrated player in FPL.

Let’s see if the algorithm shows the English forward any love in its GW7 projected XI (it doesn’t).

OPTIMUM SQUAD

Gameweek 6 saw the optimum squad rightly select Aguero and De Bruyne but wrongly pick Teemu Pukki (£7.1m) as its captain. That enlightened decision led to a whole four points, while Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) and Emiliano Buendia (£6.0m) continued the theme of disappointing Norwich assets, also scoring two apiece. Still, given the scant captain returns, 56 points is a better than average showing – four points better to be precise.

For the third week in a row, the algorithm is rolling with a 3-4-3 formation where the trio of Aguero, Pukki and Tammy Abraham (£7.4m) lead the line. It’s hard to argue with this selection given the triumvirate represent the three top-scoring forwards in FPL. Lessons have been learnt though and it is Aguero who gets the nod as captain as he looks to keep his remarkable goalscoring run going.

Despite Pukki being outstanding in the early season, the Finn has blanked in two of Norwich’s three away games, with his lone goal on the road coming in the opening fixture against Liverpool. He’ll likely find it difficult against a Crystal Palace side that were 30 seconds away from keeping a third home clean sheet on the bounce.

Kevin De Bruyne will offer able support to the front three. The Belgian has now registered attacking returns in each of the five matches he has started this season, during which time he averages a quite frankly ridiculous 10.6 points per appearance. De Bruyne takes his creative talents to Goodison Park for the late Saturday kick-off.

Sadio Mane (£11.6m) is the Liverpool asset of choice for GW7. His away record is superior to Mo Salah’s (£12.5m), having recorded two goals and one assist to the Egyptian’s no goals and one assist. Mason Mount (£6.5m) and John McGinn (£5.6m) take the final two midfielder spots. Mount’s quick return from an ankle injury was a welcome boost for the 1.5 million FPL managers that own the Chelsea midfielder, while McGinn scored his second Premier League goal of the season against Arsenal in Gameweek 6.

At the back, Liverpool may not be keeping many clean sheets this season but Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) has kept a steady flow of points coming through his attacking returns. His goal against Chelsea represented the right-back's fourth return of the season (one goals and three assists) and he has now only blanked on two of the six opening gameweeks.

Alexander-Arnold is joined at the back by Man City’s only remaining central defender Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m), and Aston Villa centre-back Bjorn Engels (£4.5m). Villa face Burnley at home on Saturday and have not conceded at Villa Park in their last two matches. Meanwhile, Otamendi is virtually guaranteed a start and has already proved his value with a clean sheet, goal and assist last time out.

The algorithm’s last line of defence is West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m). After securing a clean sheet against Man Utd, West Ham joined Man City as one of just two teams to have recorded three clean sheets this season. The Hammer’s have now not conceded a goal in 343 minutes of Premier League action – a run they will aim to extend against Bournemouth.
