Aline Pereira: Can Pereira become the second member of the family signed to the UFC?

Younger sister of former two-weight UFC champion, Alex Pereira, Aline Pereira (3-2) looks to join her brother in MMA’s premiere proving ground. Like her elder sibling, the 36 year old Brazilian is primarily a striker, with extensive experience in professional kickboxing and karate. Blending slick boxing counters with heavy kicks, Pereira’s primary weakness looks to be her takedown defence. She’s fought all but one of her bouts in LFA, with her most recent showing seeing her earn a split decision over Jade Masson-Wong on MVP MMA’s inaugural event.

Smilla Sundell: "The Hurricane" looks to earn her shot in just her third MMA bout

Perfect across two fights, Smilla Sundell (2-0) has channelled extensive experience in kickboxing and Muay Thai into a flawless start to life as an MMA pro. The 21 year old Swede built her name in ONE Championship under striking rulesets and has fought both of her two MMA bouts in Tuff-N-Uff. She’s finished both of those fights to date in classic Muay Thai fashion, planishing her opponents with elbows and knees to earn back to back stoppages. Her takedown defence has yet to be proven, but her striking has been elite enough to carry her through to date.

Aline Pereira vs Smilla Sundell prediction

A Pereira win to earn a spot on the roster alongside her brother would be a fairytale conclusion; we know how the MMA gods feel about those.

Pereira is primarily a striker, meaning that her clearest path to victory would appear to be on the feet. I just don’t see that playing out. Sundell may only be 2-0, but she’s an elite kickboxer and Muay Thai specialist, with extensive experience in a high level striking promotion through her time in ONE Championship. She’s also the naturally bigger woman, with Pereira having primarily competed at flyweight throughout her career, and is almost a decade younger.

Pereira could conceivably catch the Swede with a fight ending shot, but while she’s earned stoppages in Karate Combat and on the kickboxing circuit, the Brazilian has yet to post a finish under MMA rules. Sundell has a 100% stoppage rate in her two pro bouts to date, and while Pereira has never been finished, I could see “The Hurricane” battering her with strikes in the clinch to hand her a first stoppage loss.

Sundell either tees off on Pereira across three rounds to earn the decision, or manages to find a finish somewhere around the second round mark.

Prediction: Smilla Sundell to win
