THE LOWDOWN

LAHORE QALANDARS

  • Lahore Qalandars’ opening 2024 Pakistan Super League fixture saw the reigning back-to-back champions totally outplayed and beaten by eight wickets by Islamabad United on a batting paradise of a pitch at the Gaddafi Stadium.
  • The Qalandars scored 195/5, South African batter Rassie van der Dussen top-scoring with 71 not, but Islamabad made the chase look easy, taking down Lahore’s star-studded bowling attack and winning with ten balls to spare.

QUETTA GLADIATORS

  • Those excited about Quetta Gladiators’ prospects in this latest PSL season certainly have reason to be so, after their 16-run triumph over the Babar Azam led Peshawar Zalmi on Sunday
  • Batting first, Quetta reached 206/5 thanks largely to an opening partnership of 157 produced by Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel, who scored 75 and 74 runs respectively, before the bowlers and fielders produced an excellent defensive display, restricting Peshawar to 190/6 in response.

THE PREDICTION

T20 cricket can be an unpredictable game at times and not many will have expected the Qalandars to be taken down as comprehensively as they were in the opening match. However, this is a strong, experienced side who won’t panic after one game. It would be typical of the champions to bounce back immediately, showing their true abilities with bat and especially ball. As well as Quetta played against Peshawar, a wounded Lahore serve as formidable opposition and backing Shaheen Shah Afridi’s side to get their first two points of the season is a move worth making.
