THE TEAM NEWS

WEST INDIES

  • West Indies fans finally had something to cheer about on Wednesday as their side secured a first victory in ten ODIs, chasing down 191 to beat New Zealand with five wickets remaining and take a series lead.
  • After originally being pencilled down as part of the squad, Shimron Hetmyer has withdrawn from the squad due to personal reasons, missing not only the first ODI but also the rest of this series.
  • After failing a fitness test Gudakesh Motie has also been ruled out of contention, as has Keemo Paul with the Windies calling up Jermaine Blackwood and Yannic Cariah as replacements, the latter having yet to be capped internationally.

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand haven’t been used to tasting defeat in white ball cricket across recent months and it will be intriguing as to how they respond in this second ODI knowing that another loss would see them unable to save the series.
  • Despite not a single Black Caps batter reaching 50, it is unlikely that New Zealand will make any kneejerk moves in terms of team selection and are expected to retain the same batting order.
  • Fast bowler Matt Henry’s is no doubt a blow to New Zealand, but the quick bowling unit of the tourists didn’t have enough runs to work with last time out and provided their batters fire, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson represent a formidable pace arsenal.

THE PREDICTION

The hosts executed their skills brilliant across the first ODI, especially with the ball and are well worthy of their series lead. However, you would fully expect New Zealand to come back strongly across this second match. Kane Williamson’s men are experienced enough to put one poor performance behind them very quickly and the batters should be able to accumulate a far meatier score this time round should they be batting first. As impressive as West Indies played on Wednesday, it will be difficult for them to maintain those high standards against such a wily opponent and it may prove a shrewd play backing New Zealand to level the series.
