THE TEAM NEWS

NETHERLANDS

  • Netherlands batted first upon winning the toss in the second ODI and although they made a respectable score of 235/7, it was unsurprisingly nowhere near enough to topple England, the world champions reaching their victory target in just 36.1 overs.
  • Skipper Pieter Seelaar missed the match due to a back injury which has plagued him for a long period of time now and led to the 34-year-old announcing his retirement with immediate effect during this second ODI.
  • The captaincy has been taken over by wicket-keeper Scott Edwards, who led the team on Sunday and will do so again in this final ODI as his side look to push England closer, although the series is long gone.

ENGLAND

  • England found themselves chasing the second time round in Amstelveen after breaking the ODI record score batting first in the match before and although they lost four wickets, they once again triumphed easily as expected.
  • The big worry for the tourists was captain Eoin Morgan being dismissed for 0 once again and the form of England’s World Cup winning skipper has to be considered a concern with tougher challenges ahead, so a big score in this final ODI would be most welcome.
  • Right-arm fast bowler Brydon Carse came into the side and performed well, so is likely to retain his place whilst Reece Topley could be given a rest and Sam Curran brought back into the team after he sat out on Sunday.

THE PREDICTION

The neutrals will be wanting England to bat first in this third and final ODI of the series so they can have another crack at scoring 500 across a single ODI innings. However, credit must be given to Netherlands who have never at any point given up fighting across the two matches and can take heart from having England a little nervous at 177/4 last time out. Those ridiculing this series as a “waste of time” should take a moment and reflect on how much it will benefit the home players and Netherlands cricket as a whole coming up against the strongest England white-ball set-up in the country’s history. In terms of the outcome of this third ODI though, the tourists should have no problems in securing a series sweep.
