England’s brave attempt to save the Women’s Ashes finally came to an end on Sunday despite the heroics of Nat Sciver-Brunt. With wickets falling around whilst attempting to chase down what would have been a record ODI victory target of 283, Sciver-Brunt remained and completed a magnificent unbeaten century, However, she couldn’t get her side over the line as the boundaries dried up following a relentless wave of Australian spin. Needing a six from the final ball, Sciver-Brunt could only cloth the ball to midwicket for two runs, finishing on 111 not out as England fell just three runs short.
England had won each of their last three white ball encounters against Australia prior to that game to level the series. Whilst they now cannot regain the Ashes, they can win the ODI series and tie the multi-format series at eight points each. Question may be asked regarding Sophia Dunkley’s place at the top of the order with the opener out of form, whilst Kate Cross picked up an injury in the second ODI and could be a doubt to play here.
AUSTRALIA
They had to be dragged over the line kicking and screaming, but eventually Australia have retained the Women’s Ashes. They were pushed all the way by England in the 2nd ODI, but in the end, Alyssa Healy’s side got the job done by just three runs. With that in mind, they have a great deal to thank Georgia Wareham for, as it was her who hit Lauren Bell for 26 runs in the final over of the Australian innings batting first, parachuting them up to 282/7. Without those runs, the Ashes would be out of their hands for the first time going into the final ODI.
The decision to bring leg-spinner Alana King into the side in place of Darcie Brown was an inspired one. Her three wickets, including the prize scalp of Tammy Beaumont proved absolutely crucial in the context of the game. Ellyse Perry led the way with the bat, scoring 91, whilst Annabel Sutherland also contributed a half-century before Wareham’s late fireworks. Although Australia have now retained the Ashes, victory here would see them seal the series outright, so motivation will be extremely high among their camp.
THE PREDICTION
Every single white ball match between these two teams this summer have been so close and so well contested, it makes it difficult to choose a winner in the final game. Australia’s confidence will have been boosted and a weight lifted off their shoulders having finally ensured that the Ashes remain with them, which may improve them further. England though have a partisan crowd behind them, the pride and skills to push their opponents all the way once again. The value move here is to back an England win.
