Coronavirus in Sport – the impact on Basketball

NBA

7th April - NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated that there will be no way for the league to make a decision about when it can return until May 1 at the earliest.

1st April - The four players from the Brooklyn Nets that had tested positive for COVID-19 are now free from coronavirus symptoms.

19th March - NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggests the coronavirus could permanently alter the NBA season, with a potential view to starting the next NBA season in December.

18th March - The NBA is preparing to stabilise itself financially after being advised that the league may not be able to resume play until June at the earliest.

12th March - The NBA have suspended the 2019-20 season indefinitely after two players scheduled to play, Utah Jazz stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, tested positive for Covid-19.

CBA

15th April - The Chinese Basketball Association have elected to postpone its schedule again, this time until at least July.

25th March - The Chinese Basketball Association has further delayed its restart due to take place on the 15th of April until May following abandoned restarts in Japan and South Korea.

BBL

17th March - the British Basketball League (BBL) has postponed all matches yet to play in the 2019-20 season until further notice.

Euroleague

12th March - Europe’s elite basketball competition is suspended until further notice in tandem with the world basketball government body, FIBA, also suspending all events.

NBL

27th March - Basketball England have announced the conclusion of the NBL and WNBL regular season with all divisional winners officially declared.
