Camilo Ugo Carabelli continued his resurgence with a straight sets win over the dangerous Filip Misolic. Misolic had knocked defending champion Nuno Borges out of the tournament in the previous round but the Argentine broke him on three separate occasions to take the first set. Misolic broke early in set two but Ugo Carabelli responded well and earned a late break to win 6-3 7-5. He’s into his first semi-final on the ATP Tour since the Chile Open in February.
Jesper de Jong will be his opponent after he came from a set and a break down to defeat Tallon Griekspoor for the second time this year. De Jong dominated the second set tiebreak to level things up and crucially saved two break points when serving for the match to win 4-6 7-5 6-3.
This will be their first ATP Tour level match against each other, but they have played six times on the Challenger Tour and in qualifiers. The head-to-head is locked at 3-3, but Ugo Carabelli leads 3-2 on clay. He defeated De Jong 7-6 3-6 6-4 in the final of the Villa Maria Challenger in their most recent match last year.
This could prove to be another close encounter, but Ugo Carabelli has found some form again after a wretched run and will be the favourite to make the final.
