Arthur Cazaux edged a tight three set match with Nikoloz Basilashvili to make it through his first-round match. There were just two breaks of serve during the entire contest but Cazaux showed strong fighting spirit to come from a set down and win 4-6 7-5 7-6.
He will now go up against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Argentinian is the fourth seed here but has struggled in recent weeks. He suffered a first-round loss at Wimbledon to wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones and was then dumped out of the Braunschweig Challenger in round one, despite being one of the favourites to win the tournament. His run to the semi-finals of the Hamburg Open in late May stands as his best result of the season so far.
Etcheverry leads the head-to-head 2-0 with both of those matches being on clay. He came from a set down to beat Cazaux in the first-round of the French Open last year, which was their most recent meeting. He may have his work cut out against the Frenchman, but Etcheverry is undefeated against his opponent and will be expected to return to winning ways here.
