THE PLAYERS
JEREMY CHARDY
- Jeremy Chardy has three wins and three losses in his last six matches on clay having reached the round of 16 in Madrid before exiting at the round of 32 at both the Italian Open and in Lyon last week.
- The Frenchman lost to young compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert last week in Lyon, to whom he lost in the second round of Roland-Garros last year in an apparent changing of the guard in French tennis.
- The 32-year-old has made it as far as the round of 16 twice at Roland Garros in 2008 and 2015 and his performances at the last three tournaments on clay suggests he does not favour the surface.
KYLE EDMUND
- World number 30 Kyle Edmund has lost his last five matches since beating Ugo Humbert in Morocco back in early April and his clay court game looks to be weaker than usual.
- The British number one has exited Roland-Garros at the third round stage in his previous two appearances, both in five sets, but that looks to be a tough ask in his current form.
- Edmund has faced Jeremy Chardy twice before with the pair taking a win each, notably both on clay which suggests this match could be a tight and even affair.
THE PREDICTION
Neither player here has had much to shout about in the clay season so far and neither Jeremy Chardy nor Kyle Edmund will be confident of progressing deep in this tournament. It is actually difficult to pick a winner from two players who seem to dislike this surface, but Edmund has shown in the past that he will fight for results to the end, so this match could go to a decider.
