THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings:
Cameron Norrie 1-0 Jeremy Chardy
Last meeting: Cameron Norrie beat Jeremy Chardy 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

CAMERON NORRIE

  • Cameron Norrie lost out in three sets to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson last week at Queen’s Club and knows he must improve on his form at Eastbourne if he is to make gains at Wimbledon.
  • Since his decent run at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the British number two has dropped out of four of his five tournaments at the earliest opportunity.
  • Norrie has the upper hand in his head-to-head record with his first-round opponent Jeremy Chardy after a win in three sets in Atlanta last year - their only previous meeting.

JEREMY CHARDY

  • Jeremy Chardy could not emulate his fellow compatriot Gilles Simon in reaching the Queen’s final after he came unstuck against world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas the round of 16.
  • Chardy last played in Eastbourne in 2017 where he received a bye before losing in his first match to Dusan Lajovic and he has a 3-3 overall record at the tournament.
  • The 32-year-old has had limited success on grass over the years but will be encouraged by the showings of his elder peers Gilles Simon and Feliciano Lopez at Queen’s last week that he can achieve something here.

THE PREDICTION

Cameron Norrie is a difficult player to watch at times as he clearly has a certain amount of potential and can shock better opponents at times, but his world number 49 ranking belies a player just below the standard required for the bigger tournaments. He faces Jeremy Chardy who, nine years his senior, is at the other end of a career consistently in the mix but never quite challenging the status quo. Chardy might look to the Queen’s final and Simon and Lopez’ combined age of 71 years for inspiration in seeing off his young opponent Norrie, but the Brit’s record against the Frenchman should make that a very close-run thing.
