THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Rafael Nadal 8-4 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Last meeting: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Rafael Nadal 6-4, 0-6, 7-5
JO-WILFRIED TSONGA
- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came through a first-set tiebreak to win in straight sets over Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis in the second round and will now face old foe Rafael Nadal.
- Tsonga was the victor in his only grass-court match with Rafael Nadal almost eight years ago in a Queen’s Club quarter-final.
- World number 72 Tsonga is on a long return from injury and it remains to be seen how close he can get to his former powers against Nadal.
RAFAEL NADAL
- Rafael Nadal showed some rare frustrations in his bad-tempered second-round match with Nick Kyrgios that he won in four sets.
- Third seed Nadal will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round with whom he has the better of an 8-4 head-to-head record.
- A fully-fit Tsonga could represent Nadal’s biggest challenge for a while if the draw plays out logically, with the potential for Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
This could well be the match of the third round at Wimbledon between two modern-day greats of the game. Fans’ favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has made it through two rounds with relative ease and it is a shame that he should meet Rafael Nadal so soon in the draw but this will likely be the end of his campaign. After the fireworks against Nick Kyrgios, Nadal should be fired up enough to blast this in his customary three sets.
