THE TEAM NEWS
SURREY
Coach: Michael Di Venuto
Captain: Rory Burns
- Surrey have now lost four of their five matches in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup following their latest defeat at the hands of Glamorgan on Sunday and their chances of reaching the knockout phase are virtually ended now.
- Their selection is hampered greatly by the fact that they are without 11 members of their first team squad as key men like Jason Roy, Tom Curran and Liam Plunkett are with England, Sam Curran is at the IPL, and injuries account for the likes of Rikki Clarke, Ollie Pope, Jade Dernbach and Scott Borthwick right now.
- They are still able to count upon the likes of Dean Elgar, Rory Burns, Mark Stoneman, Ben Foakes and Morne Morkel but they are significantly under-strength and the bowling unit especially is struggling.
HAMPSHIRE
Coach: Adrian Birrell
Captain: James Vince
- Hampshire’s 100% winning start to the season came to an end on Sunday as they were beaten by Essex by 111 runs as they fell well short of Essex’s total of 341/6 so they will look to regroup and get back to winning ways here.
- Captain James Vince has started the season in impressive form and that has been recognised by the England selectors who have called him into the squad to face Pakistan in the five-match ODI series following Alex Hales being dropped from the national team.
- Brad Wheel came into the side to face Essex but he proved to be somewhat expensive going for 1/84 from his nine overs so he could rotate back out of the side. Otherwise, they are unlikely to make any changes and there shouldn't be any kneejerk reactions to one solitary loss.
THE PREDICTION
Surrey’s hopes have been seriously dented in this competition by their raft of absentees which is affecting them significantly. They still have plenty of quality players, but they are not in the best of form, and the bowling unit especially is depleted. Hampshire have been one of the best teams in the tournament so far but come off a heavy loss to Essex. That may spell bad news for Surrey as they will look to bounce back here and they should have too much quality in the batting department especially for this under-strength Surrey outfit.
