THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Novak Djokovic put down his name for Roland Garros contention after winning the Madrid Open last week, beating young Greek ace Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4.
  • The Serb reached the semi-finals last year, losing out to eventual winner Rafael Nadal, and the Spaniard will likely prove to be his main competitor here and in Paris at the end of May.
  • Djokovic is now 19-4 for the year and retains his world number one ranking heading into this tournament as last warm-up for the second Grand Slam of the year.

DENIS SHAPOVALOV

  • Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov got past Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of the Italian Open to set up just his second meeting with world number one Novak Djokovic.
  • The 20-year-old is ranked 22 in the world and reached the round of 16 last year where he lost to Rafael Nadal who went on to beat his opponent here in the semi-finals.
  • Shapovalov lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic in this year’s Australian Open and the left-hander can be a tricky foe for some of the best.

THE PREDICTION

Denis Shapovalov has the game to excite tennis fans with his unorthodox playing style and antics, with a one-handed backhand to match, and he looks to be a top ten contender in years to come. However, Novak Djokovic comes into the Italian Open off the back of an excellent win in Madrid and looks in great shape on clay this year. The Canadian could win a set, but not the tie.
