Steve Garcia: "Mean Machine" finds himself in the main event, looking to push his win streak to seven

It’s hard to believe that the Steve Garcia (18-5) of 2025 is the same individual who found himself on the wrong end of a flatline KO loss to Maheshate back in 2022. “Mean Machine” has been on an absolute tear since returning to featherweight in 2022. Garcia has been nothing short of perfect at 145 pounds since, scoring six consecutive wins in a run that included five vicious stoppages and three Performance of the Night bonuses. He’s coming off the biggest win of his career, a convincing shutout decision over divisional mainstay Calvin Kattar in July.

David Onama: Will the "Silent Assassin" cash in as a slight underdog in his first main event?

With a performance bonus in just under half of his UFC appearances to date, David Onama (14-2) rarely does boring fights. The “Silent Assassin” was relatively unheralded when he debuted against Mason Jones back in 2021, only for Onama to take the highly regarded Cage Warriors standout to the brink in a decision loss. Outside of a loss to Nate Landwehr in a life-changing brawl in 2022, Onama has been faultless since his debut, posting a record of 4-0 since beginning his UFC tenure at 2-2. He enters this matchup off the back of his most significant win to date, besting Giga Chikadze by decision in April.

Steve Garcia vs David Onama prediction

There’s a solid argument to be made that the current odds are being extremely generous towards Onama here. The “Silent Assassin” may be on a four fight win streak, but outside of a victory over the remains of Giga Chikadze in April, Onama’s resume falls off a cliff.

By contrast, Garcia’s best win on his current six fight streak is easily Calvin Kattar, but unlike his current opponent, he’s been finishing everybody that he’s fought outside of the New England Cartel standout. “Mean Machine” was on a five fight finish streak prior to going the distance with Kattar in July, a run that included the likes of Kyle Nelson, Melquizael Costa, and Chase Hooper.

That’s a concerning omen for a man who has taken the likes of Roberto Romero and Jonathan Pierce to decisions in his last three fights. Onama is incredibly tough and still hits like a truck in spite of a lack of recent stoppages, but he’s proven susceptible to pressure fighters before. Mason Jones and Nate Landwehr both found consistent success by staying in the Ugandan fighter’s face; Garcia arguably brings a similar style but with poses more of a finishing threat.

As such, this looks to be a rough ask for the “Silent Assassin.” Garcia either pours on the hurt early for a quick stoppage or wins on damage and volume across five hard fought rounds.

Prediction: Steve Garcia to win
