World number 56 Zhizhen Zhang reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters last season to announce himself a serious threat in these conditions but he lost comfortably in the first round two weeks ago to bring a three-match losing streak on clay into Rome. The 27-year-old went on to impress across surfaces in 2023 but he has struggled to express himself so far this season as he desperately seeks his typical intensity. World number 90 Daniel Elahi Galan has struggled to find any sort of rhythm on tour this season but he did reach the semi-finals of the quality Cagliari Challenger last week, losing to eventual runner-up Lorenzo Musetti, to bring the better form on Italian clay into this encounter. Galan beat Zhang in straight sets at the Munich Open last spring, also on clay, to suggest he can enjoy his best win of the year here but take the Colombian to earn at least a set to leave this tough one up to chance.
