THE PREDICTION
World number 18 Madison Keys passed a significant test on Thursday with an impressive straight-sets victory over up-and-coming Diana Shnaider. The 29-year-old returned to tour from a three-month absence at Indian Wells last time out, edging through her opening match over Hailey Baptiste before losing comfortably to Yulia Putintseva, but she should be better in this third round encounter against Xinyu Wang in what could end up a thriller.
World number 43 Wang beat the aforementioned Baptiste in the first round here on Tuesday before grabbing an excellent win over an out-of-sorts Veronika Kudermetova. The 22-year-old reached the round of 16 at the US Open last summer to prove her potential in these conditions but Keys won their previous encounter at the Australian Open last season and she came agonisingly close to making the final in New York, losing from a set up to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. Three sets seem likelier than two here so back Keys to win at least one of them as the likelier victor, with caution advisable in the American’s fourth match back from injury.
