THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating match on Wednesday as Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka meet for the third time this season. Former number one Azarenka is the only player to have beaten in-form Ostapenko this season – twice – to create one of the odder stats in recent seasons and a victory here would certainly further an entertaining narrative for 2024, with Ostapenko looking set for her best, most consistent season on tour. The Latvian has won two WTA titles already this season, in Adelaide and Linz, and she has so far reached at least one final in all of her tournaments played after winning the doubles title in Brisbane and finishing runner-up in that format, alongside Lyudmyla Kichenok, at the Australian Open.
Overall, Azarenka leads Ostapenko in a hugely interesting 4-0 head-to-head record to suggest that the Belarussian has her opponent’s number here but Ostapenko’s recent level is such that it is hard to see her failing at the fifth attempt. The eighth seed made it five wins on the spin with a consummate victory over Anhelina Kalinina on Tuesday but Azarenka has looked in good form of her own so far in Doha to offer few backable options. Two of their previous four matches went to three sets to suggest the suitably cautious call is taking Azarenka to win at least a set but the brave, potentially foolish call is that Ostapenko can break the spell here.
