THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Veronika Kudermetova struggled through a straight-set victory over an inspired Anna Bondar on Friday via two tiebreaks. The 24-year-old is an excellent clay-courter having won her first WTA title at last season’s Charleston Open and she has found some her best form this year with two runners-up finishes so far, to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1 back in January and to Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships. World number 24 Sorana Cirstea is the reigning champion at the Istanbul Open and she is nearing, remarkably, her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st first set way back in 2013. The 32-year-old beat Julia Grabher in straight sets on Friday after a wobble against Arantxa Rus in the round of 16 and she has the extra confidence of a 1-0 lead in this head-to-head record after beating Kudermetova in three sets at the US Open last season.

In many ways this should be the Istanbul Open final on recent form and merit. Cirstea will likely enjoy the majority of the support as the reigning champion but Kudermetova is probably in the better form at present. Take the Russian to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
