THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka came into Wimbledon as one of perhaps three or four clear title contenders and she got her campaign underway fittingly, conceding just four games to Panna Udvardy. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals here in 2021 before defeat to eventual runner-up Karolina Pliskova but after missing out through the Russia/Belarus ban last summer she returns improved as a Grand Slam champion, beating Elena Rybakina to the Australian Open title in January. World umber 41 Varvara Gracheva played well to oust a top grass-courter in Camila Giorgi in the first round but she has drawn one of the shortest straws here. The 22-year-old is enjoying the form of her young career this season, particularly on hardcourts, but it would be a surprise to see anything other than a straight-sets victory for Sabalenka in this first encounter between the two.
