THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Paula Badosa ended her season early last year, succumbing to her latest injury suffered in the second round of Wimbledon. The 26-year-old won Indian Wells in 2021 to cap off an incredible 12 months on tour in which she reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros but she has struggled with her form, and later fitness, since the start of 2022. When fit last season she proved herself a serious threat on her favoured clay with quarter-final runs in Charleston, Stuttgart and Rome but a three-set defeat to Bernarda Pera in Adelaide this week was her first match since July.
World number 80 Taylor Townsend is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she has also struggled to maintain enough consistent fitness and form to capitalise on her talents. The 27-year-old took Marta Kostyuk to three sets before defeat in Adelaide this week and she reached the third round of the US Open in September, upsetting 19th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia en-route. At her peak Badosa could be backed to win this match in straight sets but take Townsend to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
