THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Taylor Fritz set a new career-high ATP world ranking of fifth this week after winning his fifth ATP title at the Delray Beach Open last month but he survived an early scare on Tuesday, coming back from a set down to beat John Isner in three sets. This should be another entertaining edition in an already-storied head-to-head record between Fritz and world number 30 Denis Shapovalov, who leads the American 5-2 after winning their most recent encounter at the Vienna Open last October. 23-year-old Shapovalov came back from a set down to beat Miomir Kecmanovic on Tuesday, handing the Serb a second-set bagel in a reasonably encouraging result given his 2023 so far. Fritz beat Shapovalov not long before Vienna in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open, en-route to his fourth ATP title, and he has won two of their last four meetings to suggest their head-to-head is less one-sided than first appears these days. Back the American to win at least a set in a match likely to see three or risk the outright win. Otherwise, four of their last five matches have seen sets go both ways so taking a total of three sets could be the shrewd way to avoid picking a winner.
