THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Barbora Krejcikova avoided a serious upset on Sunday when she came back from a set down to beat Mai Hontama to claim a first win since late October. The Czech set a career-high WTA world ranking of second in early 2022 after an incredible 12 months on tour saw her win a maiden Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros, reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the quarter-finals at the US Open on her respective debuts, and then make the last eight here in Melbourne. A run to the round of 16 here last season saw a return to form that helped her lift the Dubai Masters title soon after but the Czech has struggled for any sort of consistent form since – briefly finding her level to lift the San Diego title in late September to prove that when she does settle down she remains a top 10 talent.
World number 80 Tamara Korpatsch came back from a set down to oust Jodie Burrage on Sunday but she will have to improve considerably to cause an upset here. Back Krejcikova to win outright, for caution’s sake, with the Czech likely to improve after an early scare.
