26-year-old Sho Shimabukuro will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 134th after beating Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on Thursday. The Japanese qualified the hard way to make the Astana draw but he has drawn the shortest straw available in top seed Tallon Griekspoor, who comes in hot from an excellent Davis Cup campaign with the Netherlands two weeks ago. 27-year-old Griekspoor will start his Astana Open campaign at a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th after claiming two ATP titles at this level this season in Pune and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, with two out of three victories at the Davis Cup including a huge result over Frances Tiafoe as the Netherlands sailed through to the finals. Shimabukuro is battle-hardened and hungry but Griekspoor should be coming through this opener in straight sets.
