World number 64 Soonwoo Kwon has been steadily improving over the last year into a very tricky opponent on tour. The South Korean took Denis Shapovalov to five sets at the Australian Open back in January and eventual Dubai Tennis Championships winner Andrey Rublev had to come back from a set down to beat him last time out. Kwon won his first ATP tour title at the Nur-Sultan Open in Kazakhstan last season via a three-set quarter-final against his first Indian Wells opponent Laslo Djere, who despite playing well in recent defeats is riding a five-match losing streak. World number 52 Djere took Stefanos Tsitsipas to two tiebreaks at the Mexican Open last time out and the Serb always fights tooth and nail but he is certainly one of the more surface-specific players on tour. This match-up would favour Djere on clay but take Kwon to win outright on hard.
