Former world number one Simona Halep won her first WTA title since 2020 at the start of the year, beating Veronika Kudermetova to the Melbourne 1 title. The 30-year-old also reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open before a shock defeat to Alize Cornet but she continues to improve after a long injury lay-off. Halep was champion here in 2015, beating Jelena Jankovic in the final.
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
27-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova dropped the first set to teenage wildcard Elvina Kalieva in the first round of Indian Wells and she required a deciding tiebreak to come through. The world number 52 reached the Kremlin Cup final late last season before defeat to Anett Kontaveit, with her solitary WTA title so far coming at the Shenzhen Open in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
Simona Halep and Ekaterina Alexandrova share a pretty tight 2-2 head-to-head record with a win apiece in 2019 and last season, where Alexandrova won their quarter-final in the Gippsland Trophy but Halep returned the favour in the quarters of the Stuttgart Open. The Romanian’s form and fitness were all over the place last year but she should be coming off the better in this exchange on slow hardcourts that suit her combative running. Alexandrova made 18 double faults in the first round and almost losing to a teenage debutant makes taking Halep to win in straight sets tempting here. However, Halep to come through outright is the call.
