The former world number one reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month for form that should see her blast past the enigmatic Croat in this third meeting between the two, with the Romanian leading their head-to-head record 2-0 with two previous hardcourt wins. World number 82 Vekic is always capable of the occasional top 20 performance but trying to predict when they come is frankly impossible. The 26-year-old has plenty of time left to emulate her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th but she comes into this tough opener as a lucky loser to Asia Muhammad in qualifying and a fit Halep should have little trouble coming through.
