THE PREDICTION

35-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut endured his first really poor season last year, initially starting well with a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open before a severe depreciation and eventual injury lay-off. The former number nine came into the Hong Kong Open ranked at 57th and he will be a serious unseeded dark horse in draws across the next few months if he can rediscover his relentless best level. A comfortable straight-sets victory over Fabian Marozsan on Tuesday is encouraging but it remains to be seen how he fares against fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo, who enjoyed another strong year on tour in 2023. The world number 21 claimed his second ATP title at the Eastbourne International in June, leaving only hardcourts left to conquer after earning his maiden trophy on clay in 2022, but he has a game for all surfaces that could yet develop even further.

A bye to the round of 16 may hinder Cerundolo a little here considering Bautista Agut has a match in his legs already but back the Argentine to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. RBA won their only previous encounter in three sets back in 2022.

TIP: FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO TO WIN A SET
