THE PREDICTION

World number 28 Roberto Bautista Agut is the defending champion here in Doha but he had to survive a real scare on Tuesday in a three-set victory over Marton Fucsovics. The 34-year-old finished runner-up to Soonwoo Kwon at Adelaide 2 last month before putting in some blistering, and some more dogged, displays at the Australian Open before an exit to Tommy Paul in the round of 16. RBA snapped a two-match losing streak with his result over Fucsovics and that should see him much better in this first meeting with world number 94 Christopher O’Connell, who beat Fernando Verdasco in three sets on Monday. There are still some doubts over Bautista Agut’s game at the moment as he has struggled to find his most ruthless moments at times this season but backing the Spaniard to win outright is the sensible approach here.
