THE PREDICTION

This will be an interesting first encounter between two 22-year-old contemporaries in Matteo Arnaldi and Rinky Hijikata, both of whom enjoyed career-best runs to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer. World number 43 Arnaldi upset Arthur Fils and Cam Norrie in New York, before a consummate defeat to then defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, whilst Hijikata enjoyed eye-catching results over Zhizhen Zhang and Marton Fucsovics before defeat to Frances Tiafoe. World number 84 Hijikata took Jan-Lennard Struff to five sets at the Australian Open last month to come gut-wrenchingly close to another landmark Grand Slam campaign but he has arguably started 2024 the brighter of the two – although Arnaldi ended 2023 as a Davis Cup champion as part of a fabulous Italian team. Both players came through tough openers in three sets to suggest taking this match to see a decider is the sensible way to avoid a result but otherwise back Arnaldi to win at least a set as the likelier victor on overall level in recent months.
