35-year-old Richard Gasquet is a well-loved veteran of the sport who often attracts big crowds thanks to his silky skills and as the owner of, surely, one of the top five all-time backhands. However, the world number 81 has recently been enjoying a renaissance, with two hugely impressive victories over Ugo Humbert this season at the Australian Open and Montpellier Open alongside some solid results over Soonwoo Kwon and Mikael Ymer. That puts the Frenchman at a working level high enough to be considered the favourite here against 28-year-old Oscar Otte, who has just two tour-level wins this season. Otte is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 76th thanks to his stellar run to the round of 16 at the US Open last year, as well as plenty of success on the Challenger circuit. The German is making his Masters debut at long last and that could be a powerful motivation for a huge performance once again here. Take Gasquet to win at least a set in a match that could go either way.
