THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling clash between two players set to rival each other at the top of the sport for years to come as former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez takes on Qinwen Zheng, who came to Doha at a career-high of seventh after finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open. 21-year-old Zheng overcame Magda Linette in a tricky three-set opener on Tuesday but it was an impressive result in her first match back since her life-changing run in Melbourne, whilst Fernandez, also 21, came back from a set down to oust Paula Badosa to back-up a brilliant opener over in-form Liudmila Samsonova. The Canadian ended last year in excellent form, almost single-handedly dragging her nation to their first BJK Cup title, but this run in Doha is already one of her best since she finishes runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open in 2021 and her resurgent form would be hugely welcome on tour.
Fernandez beat Zheng in three tight sets at the Monterrey Open two years ago but the Chinese will be the slight favourite in this second encounter. Back Zheng to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable quarter-finalists out of what could be the match of the tournament so far.
