19-year-old Chinese prospect Qinwen Zheng will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 71st no matter the outcome here after a straight-sets victory over Vera Zvonareva. The 19-year-old took eventual Monterrey Open champion Leylah Fernandez to three sets last week in keeping with recent form that saw her reach the Melbourne 1 semi-finals back in January.
ANGELIQUE KERBER
World number 16 Angelique Kerber finished runner-up to Bianca Andreescu at Indian Wells back in 2019. The 34-year-old has, surprisingly, never won a Masters 1000 event but amongst her 13 career WTA titles she is a three-time Grand Slam champion from the Australian Open and US Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber contracted covid-19 at the start of the season to spoil preparations. The 34-year-old has lost both her matches so far this year and this will be a tough test against a youngster in form and coming off a comfortable win on Wednesday. Kerber took the first set against Jil Teichmann before defeat last time out at the Qatar Open and three sets look fairly likely once again here. The suitably cautious option is for Kerber to win at least a set but even that is not a given, with this match best left well away from an accumulator.
