38-year-old German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber twice came back from a set down to beat Alex Bolt and Denis Kudla in qualifying. The former world number 16 reached the quarter-finals at Indian Wells as recently as 2018 to emulate his best showing at this level with a total of five last eight exits. World number 70 Emil Ruusuvuori is at the other end of a promising career and he came agonisingly close to a first tour title at the Pune Open last month, losing to Joao Sousa in three sets. The 22-year-old beat Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open this time last year to generate a lot of hype he is yet to really get close to but he looks a reasonable favourite on this surface if he can stay focused against Kohlschreiber. The wily German is well capable of keeping this close, though, so the uninspired pick is for Ruusuvuori to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
