30-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic was set to bring a small amount of hype into the Australian Open last season after reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open in 2022, where she became the player to end Serena Williams’ career, but injury saw her have to drop out and then go on to miss almost the entire of 2023. She returns to Melbourne on a protected ranking but one win from four singles matches at the United Cup two weeks ago does not bode well for her chances against world number 40 Petra Martic, who is well capable of a run to the second week at any major tournament. 32-year-old Martic enjoyed a decent run to the quarter-finals in Auckland last week before defeat to eventual champion Emma Navarro but she has struggled in Melbourne more than any other Grand Slam to offer a way in for Tomljanovic here. Three sets seem likelier than two so back Martic to earn at least one to leave the result up to chance.
