THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Petra Kvitova is playing her first tournament since losing to Paula Badosa in the third round of Wimbledon, where she won both of her Grand Slam title in 2011 and 2014. The 32-year-old claimed the 29th WTA title of her career, and importantly the first since early 2021, at the Eastbourne International back in June and it will be interesting to see what level she can bring to the North American hardcourt swing as a former Canada Masters champion from 2012. World number 35 Alison Riske-Armitraj is also at her best on grass, with a recent run to the Nottingham Open final scuppered by a surprising champion in Beatriz Haddad-Maia. The American, also 32, finished runner-up at the Wuhan Open in 2019 for her best showing at this level but a straight-sets loss to qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik at the Silicon Valley Classic last week is most likely not a level high enough to oust Kvitova. There is plenty of trepidation about this match that makes leaving it out of an accumulator wise but despite trailing Riske-Armitraj 2-1 in their head-to-head back in-form Kvitova to edge this outright.
