THE PREDICTION
World number 85 Joao Sousa recently came out of the absolute blue to win his fourth career ATP tour title at the Pune Open last month, beating Emil Ruusuvuori in the final. The Portuguese has not won a tour-level match since, although he claimed a victory in the Davis Cup group stage last week, and he comes into the main draw of Indian Wells as a lucky loser as the man to replace Grigor Dimitrov who in turn replaces Novak Djokovic in the seeds. We have seen plenty of redemption stories from lucky losers over the last few seasons with Sousa well capable of going on to win now on this second wind, especially as he was the victor in the only previous meeting with Pedro Martinez back in 2018. 24-year-old Martinez won the first title of his career last time out, though, at the Chile Open in a three-set victory over Sebastian Baez that took him to a career-high ATP world ranking of 49th. This match looks tight and well worth leaving out of an accumulator but take Martinez to win at least a set as the man riding a winning streak.
