THE PREDICTION
World number one Novak Djokovic is a two-time former champion here at the Monte-Carlo Masters, winning in 2013 and 2015, but he has typically struggled to make a dent om the draw in recent years. The 36-year-old often opts to begin his clay swing in Monte-Carlo, rather than warm-up at a 250 the week before, and that has seen him put in some of his rustier performance over the years, failing to win back-to-back matches here in each of his last three campaigns.
That certainly opens the door for an upset by world number 41 Roman Safiullin, who will be eager to give his all after an impressive straight-sets opener over Jaume Munar on Monday, but Djokovic won their first encounter in straight sets at the Tel Aviv Open two years ago to remain strong favourite. A shock defeat to Luca Nardi at Indian Wells this time last month was Djokovic’s most recent match but an immediate exit would still be a big shock. Back the Serb to come through outright or consider a one-off on Safiullin to snatch a set.
