THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling throwback to pre-covid 19 times as two former number ones on respective rises back up the rankings face off for the second time this season. The pair met this time last month in Naomi Osaka’s second-match back in 18 months, where the Japanese took the first set before being edged out in Brisbane, but this time around should be a much more entertaining scrap with Osaka enjoying her first serious run since returning and Karolina Pliskova bursting into form to win her first title since 2020 last Sunday in Romania. 26-year-old Osaka received a handy walkover to the quarter-finals after Lesia Tsurenko was forced to drop out of the draw and that should offer a huge boost to the Japanese after claiming back-to-back wins for the first time since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open in 2022.
31-year-old Pliskova has fought tooth-and-nail to extend her winning streak to eight this week, dropping sets in all three of her matches so far in Doha but admirably coping with some shocking scheduling to do so. The Czech came back from a set down to beat Linda Noskova in impressive circumstances on Wednesday but she will face a tougher task in a fresh, and simmering, Osaka. Pliskova beat Osaka from a set down at the Brisbane International just over four years ago, en-route to picking up her most recent title until last weekend, and she leads their head-to-head 4-2 overall to look the slightest favourite in very tough call. Given that Pliskova has dropped at a set in all three of her matches so far, back Osaka to earn at least one to leave the victor up to chance.
