THE PREDICTION

Former world number six Matteo Berrettini beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on Sunday at the Marrakech Open to win his first ATP title since 2022, bursting back inside the top 100 to put a terrible few years of injury setbacks behind him. Four of the 27-year-old’s eight titles have come on clay but this will no doubt be his favourite after likely considering retirement, with Marrakech only his second tournament back from injury since January.

World number 66 Miomir Kecmanovic is a tough opening draw for most players here in Monte-Carlo but the Serb seems to have lost some of his former potency on the surface, on which he won his maiden title at Kitzbuhel in 2020. 24-year-old Kecmanovic brings a concerning four-match losing streak into Monaco after a very poor return to favoured hunting grounds across the Sunshine Double but expecting Berrettini to roll through on his winning streak would be unwise given the emotional release Sunday will have been. Back Berrettini to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors.

TIP: MATTEO BERRETTINI TO WIN A SET
